(News) CSCS holds off TCA in volleyball
The Classical Academy put a scare into reigning Class 3A state volleyball champion Colorado Springs Christian School on Saturday.
After dropping the third game, the host Lions trailed for most of the fourth before holding on for a 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 victory.
“We just never got into our rhythm,” said CSCS coach Mike Broekhuis, whose team improved to 15-0. “We needed to establish our outsides, but we just never did. We were not on top of our game for whatever reason, just didn’t seem to have the energy and the rhythm that we normally have. We just had to dig in and fight.”
CSCS had little trouble the first two games, but in the third TCA (11-3) worked through seven tied scores to win.
In the fourth game, TCA tied the game at 2 and only relinquished the lead once before tying again at 19. CSCS took the game from there, winning 25-20.
Morgan Broekhuis led CSCS with 16 kills, 18 assists, and one block while Hannah Walker added 20 assists and three service aces.
Lauren Alejo paced TCA with 30 assists, one service ace, nine digs, and three blocks.
“I was overall very pleased with them in Games 3 and 4,” TCA coach Lori Alejo said. “… I think this was good for my team to gain a little bit of confidence in themselves and know that we can hang at that level.”
