(News) Boys' basketball: Coronado holds on against Mesa Ridge

Ben Foley scored 31 points, and Coronado survived a second-half charge by Mesa Ridge in a 62-55 home win Thursday night.

"It was a tale of two halves," said Coronado coach Al Blanc, whose team led 39-21 at the intermission. "We come out and we jump on them, so we're up pretty good, then we come out flat and complacent (after the half)."

The drop-off in production coincided with Foley feeling the effects of a fractured thumb.

"It got hit pretty hard at the end of the second quarter, so that was pretty rough," Foley said.

Foley, who finished 17-of-29, continued to fight even when his shots were not dropping.

"When you're not hitting your shot you make up for it defensively on the rebound and (Foley) did that," Blanc said. "Our problem was in the third quarter he wasn't hitting it, and we had some other kids that didn't step up and missed (shots)."

The Grizzlies capitalized on the Cougars' slow third quarter, outscoring the home team 20-8.

"That could've been the turning point in the game, but we held on in that fourth quarter," Blanc said.

The Grizzlies' Andre Terry finished with 12 points, and Carlos Torres and Deontay Galbearth both had nine.

"I was kind of scared to be honest there for a second," Foley said. "But our team showed a lot of heart out there. We showed a lot of maturity."
